I hear this all the time:
“I want to try yoga… but I’m really not flexible.”
And every time someone says it, I just want to sit down with them and say:
“Honestly? That’s the whole point.”
Most of us aren’t walking around with open hips and perfectly lengthened hamstrings.
Most of us are tight from sitting, working, lifting, parenting, existing.
Yoga was never meant for the super-bendy people on Instagram.
It was meant for real bodies living real lives.
And if that’s you?
You’re exactly who yoga was designed for.
Somewhere along the way, yoga got a reputation for being all about stretching.
But the more I teach, the more I realize flexibility is almost never the real issue.
People aren’t “too tight”, they’re usually:
● Stressed
● Over-bracing
● Not breathing
● Unsure how to move
● Trying to force things that should be supported
When those things shift, the body suddenly has space it didn’t have before.
And none of that requires being flexible to begin with.
Most people who try yoga for the first time walk away thinking:
“This should be easier,”
or
“My body just doesn’t do this,”
or
“I’m not built for this.”
But that’s not what’s happening.
You just weren’t given the tools to feel stable and supported in the shapes yet.
Honestly, I wish people knew this.
It would save them so much self-judgment.
▪︎ Sit tall.
▪︎ Legs straight.
▪︎ Inhale, arms up.
▪︎ Exhale, fold.
▪︎ Stop wherever your body naturally stops.
▪︎ Take a breath.
▪︎ Let it soften.
If you’re nowhere near your toes? Great.
That’s where you begin.
And you don’t have to force anything.
Your body opens as it feels safe, not as it feels stretched.
What keeps people coming back to yoga isn’t the bendy stuff.
It’s the strength they develop.
The stability they find.
The way their lower back stops screaming.
The way they feel more connected, more calm, more aware.
Flexibility is just a side effect of breathing and moving with intention.
It’s not the goal.
There’s no checklist.
No flexibility test.
No minimum requirement.
Yoga meets you exactly where you are.
Even if where you are feels tight, unfamiliar, or intimidating.
Especially then.
You don’t need to touch your toes.
You don’t need to know the poses.
You don’t need to feel ready.
You just need one thing:
A willingness to show up exactly as you are.
The rest unfolds from there.
And if you want support as you begin, you’re welcome to explore my programs, classes, or any of the sessions I’ve shared on YouTube. [Explore "Yoga With Ashley Bonomo" Here]
